Update - Story Board

Today we have been refining our new story board as we changed our idea quite significantly form the original plan. This has been a lengthily process as it requires a lot of ideas and creativity as well as focus in order to get a good story board, in the next could of days it will be posted on the blog and we will complete an 'animatic' version of it.

Organizing Props

In order to film our music video successfully we need to organise the props prior to filming.
The nature of our video means that we don't need to use many props, however there are a few items that we require:

  • Guitars (we plan to get these from the music department and a group member that owns one)

  • UV paint (we will buy this on Amazon)

  • UV light (we plan to buy this on Amazon)

  • Speaker for when we need to play the music in the street (a group member owns one)

Most of the props are either already owned or can be ordered for next day delivery.

Font Ideas // Nathan Beard

Filming Update

As of 12/10/15 we haven't yet started to film our video, however we have been working hard in order to finish our plans on the locations, props and roles so that as soon as we start filming (ideally half term so 19/10/15 - 25/10/15) we are ready to start and will need little interruption to plan something.

I believe that this is going to be highly beneficial so that we can get all the scenes filmed in the least amount of time possible in order to maximize time editing, this will allow us to finish the video earlier. This will give us time to decide what we like and what we don't like, and due to the fact that we allowed time for this we may be able to alter the video to incorporate these changes.

We have now finalized the fact that we want to to film in two locations, in order to achieve the best results possible (in a city street and in a studio). This means that we need to organised a studio (ideally this would be the one the school have available). And get the equipment ready.

Weekly Summary (05/10/15 - 11/10/15)

This week the focus has been on getting our ideas for the digipaks and magazine ads cemented and ready for use in our first draft, this has seen each member of the group look in detail at the fonts and imagery as well as the colors that we are going to use. We are also further gathering examples of other album art and digipaks in order too help visualize what our ideas will look like.

Overall this week has been relatively productive and the tasks that we have completed will come into their own when we start our final digipaks.

Digipak Ideas // Nathan Beard

I have gathered some digipak layouts that I feel would be good to use for my own. I think that I would like to use a digipak that has more than 4 panels, as I think that it adds to the experience

4 Panel Digipak
The 4 panel digipak is probably the most used and therefore may come across as a bit mainstream and dull, this is not the image I want form y digipak and therefore it rules out the 4 panel design slightly, however it is versatile and could be used in a different way to make it seem different.

6 Panel Digipak

This is a traditional 6 panel digipak and is a layout that I am considering using, because it gives more space for me to use to create an image for the band, it also gives space to put a booklet, however I personally don't think I will use one.

Weekly Summary (28/09/15 - 04/10/15)

During the course of this past week, we have been focusing on a few aspects of the coursework. One of the aspects was the video and getting a clearer concept together ready to start filming. We have now completed and published various ideas about styling, some more influences, how we plan to use the narrative theories in our video and the storyboard. This should aid us in the coming weeks, when we will be filming our video.

Another aspect we have focused on is that we are starting to research and draft our individual digipaks, this means that we have been making individual posts about inspiration and progress, as well as analysis of existing digipaks.

Overall this week has been relatively productive and the tasks that we have completed will come into their own when we start filming our video.

Digipak - Initial Ideas And Inspiration // Nathan Beard

This is the powerpoint presentation with my initial ideas and inspiration for my digipak cover art.

Styling for the video

These are some images that I have found which represent the style that we want to represent in our video.
These are styles that I think accurately represent what the target audience wear themselves and what they want to see in their favorite bands. It also fits in with the image of modern and simple that we are trying to portray with our band.

Video Inspiration - Let's Dance To Joy Division

We have took inspiration from this video. Their use of the plain background and minimal setting shows us that a successful video can be created in our same music genre and with the mise en scene we're aiming for.

Story Board

We have now drawn and decided on all of the shots for our video, however the story board is not final and may change.

 Animatic:

*UPDATE: ANIMATIC RE-UPLOADED DUE TO COPYRIGHT ISSUES*

Original Video:

Apply relevant narrative theorists to your music video

Illustration – the visual form of the music video. This can be seen by the visual singing of a certain song that they were singing. These videos are often called the performance videos because you can actually see the act performing the song. This is what we are doing in our music video as the ideas we all have are to have the band playing the song but we would have lots of different shots.
Amplification- Amplification would be a music video which has both narrative and performance of showing the story in the music video but also has the connotations of the meanings. They are designed to be creative and artistic which is made to look like a story or an artistic statement.
Disjuncture- The videos initially ignore the music video completely and the genre of the music and tries to create a whole new meaning to the lyrics. The videos don’t normally make sense and most of the time use abstract imagery that viewers would find very interesting. They usually have some kind of performance from the artist but do not have any links to the lyrics or to what the band is performing. This is not what

Tzvetdan Todorov narrative has 5 main stages but with 3 key points:

1) Beginning, a stage of equilibrium- this is like our music video because it starts off with just shots of the band in standing positions but then slowly changing the way they are looking in the video.

 2) Middle, Disruption to the equilibrium- This is like our music video because this is where the video     will go a bit crazy with the UV light and the music becoming more up-tempo and more disruptive.

 3) End, restraining the equilibrium- this is when the video is going towards the end so in our music video it would be exactly like the outro.

Vladimir Propp 6 main stages to it, he analysed the stories of Russian fairy tales and wrote his theory about any kind of story:

 1) Preparation, where the scene is set for the people watching it to see what is happening. This is    linked to our music video slightly, because the people that are in the video are set as the three in the band showing where the scene starts and showing when the story of the video actually begins.

 2)  Complication is where a problem or an evil occurs. This doesn’t apply to our video; there is no problem that the actors occur in the video.

 3)  Transference is where a hero goes on to lead the quest against the problem or the evil that occurs. This again doesn’t happen in our music video or isn’t going to happen at the moment.

 4) Struggle is where the audience see a significant fight between a hero and a villain. This definitely does not happen in our music video.

 5)  Return is where the hero return with the quest fulfilled, this doesn’t happen in our music video and does not apply to our video in any way.

 6) Recognition is where the victim is punished and the hero is rewarded for his duties that he carried out. This has no part in our music video as we have no hero or a villain.

Claude Levi-Strauss- he observed that all narratives are organised around the conflict between oppositions. This theory goes against what we are doing in our music video because we don’t really have a story in our video it is just a representation of the group performing the song and doesn’t have a story.

Weekly Summary (21/09/15 - 27/09/15)

During this past week we have have been refining the video ideas we had. We had some ideas that when we evaluated we decided that they weren't good enough to make the video.
These changes where then implemented into our story board, which is now nearing completion.

Joe also did the audience biography post, analysing two TMG members and finding out about their interests likes and pastimes. This is hugely useful as it enables us to further develop the video and our band's image to the tastes of our target audience.

We also updated the blog and the band's twitter page with some new cover images I made, this was in order to give a unified design across all of our platforms, it also aids the professionality of our work as a whole. I believe the new images accurately represent the direction we are taking the band and video: 'simple yet memorable'.

We also looked into some potential camera shots we could use in our video, this will help us when it comes to filming and will cut down the time it takes as we also have a rough idea of what works and what doesn't.

Weekly Summary (14/09/15 - 20/09/15)

This week was primarily about deciding upon when, where and how to film our video, this involved a lot of discussion between our group members as we were weighing up the advantages and of course disadvantages of all the locations that we thought about.

We also took a more in depth look at our chosen song and what all the lyrics meant as it is important to know this when deciding on the style and location for the video.

Another task we carried out during this past week was to take pictures of our band members and introduce them as well as look at how they compare to the existing band and, from that make a decision on the roles of our band members.

We also evaluated all the feedback we gathered from our peers from when we did our pitch presentation, this is an invaluable task as it has highlighted several issues that we previously hadn't clearly evaluated and explained, an example of this is the location of our video.

Our band:

Weekly Summary (07/09/15 - 13/09/15)

This week was very productive, we decided on our band name, which was the primary focus along with the pitch. Deciding on a band name was more difficult than we initially thought as it was difficult to find one that matched the genre and song we had chosen as well as the image we had created for the band.

The pitch was also a focus this past week as we had to ready it to present to our peers in order to convince them on the idea. This was a big task and required a lot of preparation. We decided to use animoto as it was the most effective and eye catching method we found.

We also did a fair amount of the market research this week including fashion and the indie scenester group (the group we have singled out as a our target group)

Target Market Research - Fashion

Our target market group, indie scenesters  wear modern and simple clothing, like plain colored such as black skinny jeans and simple t-shirts. There are various different shops that sell clothes similar to these and our target market usually shops at at least one if not all of these shops.
For this reason we will be dressing our band members in the sort of clothes that appeal to the target audience as it will make the band feel more relatable.

Weekly Summary (31/08/15 - 06/09/15)

This week, all  members of the group have worked hard. This week the work has mainly revolved around watching lots of music videos in order to identify techniques we want to use in our own, we have analysed both past student videos and professional ones alike, this allowed us to compare the quality and to get an idea of the level that is expected from us.

We also listened to lots of songs in order to try and establish a genre that we like, once we had that done, it was about narrowing it down to which band and song we liked and wanted to make a video for.

Towards the end of the week we also split down the tasks we needed to do both for the schedule and other items we thought would be beneficial.

Past Student Video Analysis - 3

This video is very different from all of the other past student videos, it deviates from traditional style of music videos quite a lot in that it doesn't feature (aside form the person the video quickly flashes to) feature a main 'character' as such. However, I like the style of the video and feel that the style used fit the song extremely well. The other aspect of the video that I like is the effects that have been added with the edit, these are different and are highly creative, and again match well with the song used.

Overall I feel as though this style of video is highly sensitive to the song it accompanies and if the two don't fit it wouldn't work at all.
