Update - Story Board

Today we have been refining our new story board as we changed our idea quite significantly form the original plan. This has been a lengthily process as it requires a lot of ideas and creativity as well as focus in order to get a good story board, in the next could of days it will be posted on the blog and we will complete an 'animatic' version of it.
Picture: Shot ideas we were coming up with

New Band Member Recruited

We have now been able to cast a replacement band member for Max (who is now permanently unavailable). And he will be introduced to the song and video ideas today ready for filming tomorrow.
We contacted a significant number of potential candidates, many candidates weren't available for briefing and filming on the three day we had chosen and therefore were unsuitable for the role.
In the end we narrowed it down to two candidates and chose Louis Grocott for the role.
We are happy with this decisions and see Louis to be a valuable addition to the team.

Mood Board - Studio (Potential Location)

I have compiled some images into a mood board, the studio is a place that we feel would give a chance to really put the focus on the band members and the instruments which would give the video the 'stripped back' anti mainstream feel that indie music fans appreciate. This therefore makes the studio a good location to film our video. The disadvantages to using a studio is that it can sometimes come across as 'clinical' and blank or lacking in creativity, which is not the message we want to put across.

Mood board - Urban street (Potential Location)

I have made a mood board of an urban environment as I feel that this would be a good place to film our video. It fits in the the indie genre well as it is different and creative. It also has the added bonus of being cheap and easy to access. It offers plenty of opportunities to do some 'Cinematic style shots of the main singer and the other band members, as well as adding depth to the video.
A disadvantage to filming on the streets or in other such urban environments is that it can be difficult to get the right shot as there is always going to be people and other things in the way. It will therefore low down filming relatively significantly.

Song Meaning (Undercover Martyn)

The meaning for the song Undercover Martyn, is that the lead singer is trying to convince his reclusive friend to stop being alone in his house (basement) and to come out into the outside world and discover new things.

This will help us plan our story line for the video, with a parallel video (the band and the friend)

Song Lyrics - Undercover Martyn

Undercover Martyn

And she spoke words that would melt in your hands
And she spoke words of wisdom

To the basement people, to the basement, many surprises await you
In the basement, people, in the basement

You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

And she spoke words that would melt in your hands
And she spoke words of wisdom

To the basement people, to the basement, many surprises await you
In the basement, people, in the basement

You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the carseat, cause you're not up to going

Out on the main streets, completing your mission

Music Video Pitch

Music Video Inspiration

Peace, Lost on me- This is good inspiration for us because we want to change the lighting throughout our music video but also have the video as mainly videoing the band. We are mainly looking at the start of this music video as the inspiration as we will be filming in a space where we can have the whole band set out.

Train, drops of Jupiter- we would like to use this video as inspiration because the band is all in one position and are very relaxed they are performing the song as they would at a gig. Also the camera uses lots of different shot types with different angles of shots, they use low shots where the camera is looking up at the band and there is high shots which look down at the band playing. We could use this in our music video.

John Mayer, Who says- This video may be good inspiration because of the lighting used throughout this video. There is a lot of different lighting and visuals used throughout, including black and white and colored but also some of the colour is taken out of the video to make it look more old style and more indie. Spotlights are also used and reflecting light off water. This gives a nice effect, we are definately going to change to black and White throughout the video.

The Script, the man who cant be moved- This has given us inspiration for our music video because of the band playing together in the car park. interesting lighting during those shots. Having the lighting like this gives a heavenly feel to the video in these parts kind of like its his imagination of them playing together.

One Republic, Counting Stars- This has given us inspiration for our music video because of the energy that the band members produce in the video. We believe that the people who do it in our video should be this energetic because it shows the song and the band in a good light. We will be mainly getting inspiration from the parts where the band are if the dusky and dirty room together. We believe using these ideas will benefit our video. Obviously we will not be using the crocodile in our video.

The 1975, Girls- This video has given us inspiration because of the starting. The video is Black and white but then it switches too in colour and this is what we want to implement into our video. Also when the video is switching from one guitar to the other while they are playing is something that we want to put into our video because it shows the instruments that are being played in the band.

Band name and biography

Small ruin:

In 2008, several Exeter grad students in the history department formed Small ruin after discovering a shared love of indie music during a freshers party at the university. The three original founders – Andy Walters, Ben Smith, Max Wilson all dropped out of school to peform full-time, while Griff Thomas - stayed in school and left the band upon graduation to pursue careers in entomology.

They are soon going on their 3rd UK tour around medium sized venues. These include O2 academy’s in Birmingham, Glasgow, Sheffield, Newcastle and Oxford.

Audience Profile

As we have decided on re creating and Indie song we have a good idea of who we are targeting to watch our video. At this moment, we have decided on covering 'Undercover Martyn' by Two Door Cinema Club.

After research via "UK Tribes", we have found the the type of people who would regularly listen to bands such as Two Door Cinema Club and others are known as 'Indie scenesters'. These (usually young) people are always on the look out for that fresh new band to brag about hearing first when they suddenly hit the mainstream market.
In order to conform to the interests of these people we will have to make careful decisions on the look of those featured in our video. For example, clothing is a big deal when attracting the right mise en scene for a music video. We will try and stay away from branded clothes and take inspiration from the original video on how to dress and style our band members. In the original, all three are wearing smart shoes with slim fitted trousers. This casual look detracts away from the usual 'jeans and trainers' and offers a smarter, more mature essence to the band. One of them has chosen to roll up the sleeves of his plain white shirt and the lead singer is dressed in a shirt and jacket. I believe the style that has been delivered is smart/casual which links to the video as it is not one to be taken seriously.

The age of our audience I believe will be between 17-21. Those who are at college or just finishing university as they are most likely to have a good passion and interest in both music and fashion; two things of great importance to Indie Scenesters.

We will try and replicate the styling shown on the band members in the original music video in our own version. This should then create the most appropriate mise en scene for each of the characters and give us the best chance of attracting the right audience to our video.

Song Decision

We have decided to cover 'Undercover Martyn' by Two Door Cinema Club. This song is liked by everybody in the group and we feel that we will be able to produce a good music video for the song.

The genre of the song is indie rock.  After studying the video and discussing at length, we feel that the simple but effective mise en scene will mean we can use the good ideas from the original but allow us to put our own twist on the finished video.

Identifying The Genre

The genre we are choosing for our music video is the indie/alternative genre, this genre is popular amongst both males and females many of which are aged 16-25. Fans of this genre often choose to be different. This is largely in the way they dress and act.

A couple of examples of indie type bands would be The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club. They both represent the fans of the indie genre in the way that they stand out as being different amongst other bands that are more 'mainstream'.

We believe that as a group we can produce a good indie music video as the songs are interesting and offer room for creativity in the video.

Below are some images of The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club. Both bands wear indie type clothing, including skinny type jeans and informal t-shirts.
